Divine Providence Village is a thoughtful next step in St. Vincent de Paul of Baton Rouge’s mission to feed, clothe, house, and heal—an intentional bridge between emergency shelter and fully independent living. Located on existing St. Vincent de Paul property, this carefully designed community of 24 individual 144-square-foot homes, constructed in phases, will serve as a structured, supportive “step-up” program for men and women who have already demonstrated progress in St. Vincent de Paul’s shelters and are ready to move forward.

This is not simply a housing project; it is a stability project.

 

Each resident will enter Divine Providence Village through a referral process grounded in demonstrated readiness and personal commitment. Once accepted into the program, residents will work closely with a dedicated case manager who will craft a customized plan for long-term success. That six-to-12- month plan will address employment, income growth, financial literacy, savings milestones, credit repair, health care access, and the personal barriers that too often stand between a neighbor and success in securing and maintaining a permanent home. At the same time, it will honor each person’s strengths, work ethic, and aspirations—building not just housing stability, but dignity and confidence.

 

The physical design reflects both stewardship and strategy. Twenty-four modest, efficient homes create privacy and ownership of space, while shared amenities reinforce accountability and community. A central community building will provide space for case management, life-skills workshops, and resident meetings. A shared patio will host gatherings that foster belonging and mutual encouragement. Communal laundry facilities will support daily living. Secured access ensures safety for residents and responsible management of the property.

 

From a business perspective, Divine Providence Village is intentionally scalable and cost-effective. By utilizing property already owned by SVDP and modest-footprint homes, and by engaging community partners who generously contribute in-kind expertise and materials, we maximize impact per dollar invested. A privately funded program, which allows SVDP to determine the best program design and eligibility criteria, the program reduces strain on emergency shelters by creating forward movement. It lowers the long-term public cost of homelessness by reducing recidivism. Most importantly, it creates measurable outcomes: increased earned income, improved credit profiles, sustained employment, savings accumulation, and successful placement into permanent housing.
