Filling Prescriptions for Neighbors in Need
St. Vincent de Paul of Baton Rouge Community Pharmacy

Every day in our community, neighbors arrive at the pharmacy counter with prescriptions in hand—and no way to pay for them. The St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy exists so no one has to choose between their health and basic necessities like food, housing, or utilities.

The neighbors we serve are managing chronic and life-threatening conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Some have lost jobs, insurance, or retirement savings. Others work full-time but still cannot afford the medications their doctors prescribe. For many families, the cost of medication is greater than what they spend on rent, utilities, and groceries combined. Before finding help through St. Vincent de Paul, some were forced to skip doses, ration pills, or go without treatment entirely.

The Community Pharmacy serves as a vital safety net for low-income, uninsured, and underinsured residents across twelve civil parishes in the greater Baton Rouge area. Every prescription is filled with dignity, compassion, and respect—because access to healthcare is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Our Impact
With the generous support of donors, partners, and community organizations, the St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy made a life-changing difference in 2025:

-
More than 1,125 prescriptions filled
-
Over $1,093,450 in medications provided at no cost to patients

Behind each number is a neighbor who was able to manage their condition, stabilize their health, and continue essential treatment. While prescriptions can be counted, the medical crises prevented—strokes, heart attacks, emergency hospitalizations, cannot.

The Need Is Growing

As medication costs rise and economic uncertainty impacts more households, demand for pharmacy services continues to increase. Many who seek help never imagined they would need assistance, yet find themselves facing impossible choices. While the Community Pharmacy’s impact is significant, resources are limited, and not every prescription request can currently be met.

How the Community Makes This Possible

The Fill a Prescription initiative—founded by Pat Shingleton and WBRZ-Channel 2 in partnership with St. Vincent de Paul and community supporters—plays a critical role in sustaining this work. Through this initiative, our community comes together to ensure life-sustaining medications remain available to neighbors in need.
